I grew up in South Africa, in a family where God Jesus and church were always part of the conversation. I think I’ve always been aware of God and that he was with me and I grew in my knowledge of him through my teens, but as a student I invited God to infiltrate every aspect of my life for the first time. I went through a season where the theme of discipleship came up again and again, either in my bible reading or conversations. The piece of scripture that probably sent me over the edge was from Isaiah 6:8:
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? ”And I said, “Here am I. Send me!
I wanted to be that guy. What followed was an amazing time of growth during which I really got to know God as my dad, Jesus as my big brother and friend and the holy spirit as my guide and comforter and yet God never became less majestic.
Since then I’ve gone through ups and downs, revelations and really deep struggles. I think all of them serve to show us who God is. I don’t have a theological degree and while we do need those that do, I’ve heard quite a few pastors say that being a “normal christian” has its advantages in reaching people. So here I am :)
